Pen 4105 Wahl-Eversharp long-slender flat-top 1927-1929-ish   $345

Killer Color. Monster NIb.

Nib condition: Exc
Threads: Perfect clarity: NA

Point: STUB FLEX Imprint:  Extra Fine
Size: 5 1/8" 12.9 cm
PRICE: $345
COMMENTS: Wahl of course was a "BIg Five" American pen maker. This late 1920s pen is from Wahl's Canadian division and packs Canadian imprints.  A top-grade example. Even unworn pens often see the Jade celluloid head to "spinach" over time. This one is top 5% on color. Clean trim and plastic. Pencil has different clip, but came with the pen when I bought it at the Chicago Pen Show few years back and also has Canadian imprints. Not sure this pencil ever was offered roller-lip, so this could be formally proper set, though at worst it is a reasonably matched pair. The pencil really doesn't mattter though and is tossed in gratis.

Beyond gem condition, this one has a monster nib, double-broad stub flex. The "stub" means that even with the potential for double broad or wider (with flex) downstrokes, the crosstroke is very  thin. Stub is better for most non-artists who seek vintage style shaded handwriting.  The Flex thing is getting out of hand with some collectors, with $100 pens on ebay pulling $500 because of "flex".  This one has flex and better still has the stub feature, at trivial bump up for price of this already desirable specimen. Hmmm... perhaps with all my whining it is time to return to ebay after years away and offer flex points there ;)   You'll like this one.

COMMENTS: A superb example of a hard to find pen from ~1929.  The miitary clip standard-diameter Personal Point essentially is a stubby model, fat but a bit short. It is not a slender ladies' pen. It packs a #4-size Gold Seal nib as does its side-clip brother. This one has it all. Superbly preserved Lazulitic Blue Celluloid, even at the threads. Gold Seal. Clean trim. Clean plastic. Gold Seal nib that is very flexible, going from fine-medium to double broad without inappropriatre pressure.  A gem.

COMMENTS: Let's do a bit of a Wahl primer.  Wahl saw frantic evolution of pens from 1929-1932.  The Type III Equi-Poised (1930-1932) can loosely be seen as a bridge between flat-top style and the faceted and streamlined Doric which would dominate Wahl's 1930s. The colors mostly were carryover from flat-top era. The contour can be seen as a a mildly streamlined and bevel-tipped version of the flat-top, or can be seen as a non-faceted version of the Doric.  The oversized pens and the standard pens were offered in longer (side clip) and shorter (soldier clip) versions. The side-clip oversized pen (this one!) was a massive thing, 5.75" long a  Gold Seal pens (flat top and Equi-Posied) pens at discount price, marked by the punching of the Gold Seal and generally with the presence of non Gold Seal but Wahl-made "warranted" gold nibs, #7-marked for oversized pens. The big Equi-Poised is much more scarce than large  Wahl ("Deco-Band") flat-tops.

The pen today is a quite clean Black and Pearl oversized side-clip Type III Equi-Poised, with punched seal and the Wahl-made "warranted #7" nib.  It thus prices a bit below one still with Gold Seal intact and with Gold Seal nib.  But, the main value is in its size, quality, color and rarity.  This one ahs clean metal and color. Color is not perfect but is top 10-15%. Even light yellow pearl throughout with hint of pink near barrel threads and bit more at top of cap. These don't turn up often, and most are well more worn and discolored. Nice flexy fine-medium point.

COMMENTS: Symphony replaced the popular Wahl Skyline, and the barrel shape channels that earlier pen. The two tone metal cap enhances the eye appeal of this streamlined pen.   A pen of good quality, Symphony is somewhat underappreciated in the pendom community today. Clean pen. Nice nib.

COMMENTS:    Symphony replaced the vaunted Wahl Skyline, and the barrel shape channels that earlier pen. The two tone metal cap enhances the eye appeal of this streamlined pen.  This one is, i believe, third generation.  A pen of good quality, Symphony is somewhat underappreciated in the pendom community today.  The "701" was the intermediate model regarding price point and trim level. This one is mint stickered, freshly resaced and ready to go.

COMMENTS:  Symphony replaced the vaunted Wahl Skyline, and the barrel shape channels that earlier pen.  This one is, i believe, third generation.  A pen of good quality, Symphony is somewhat underappreciated in the pendom community today.  The "707", despite the heftier model number, was entry level for the series.  This one is, i believe, third generation. The fine nib has real flex, though not "wet noodle". The  pen is mint stickered, freshly resaced, and ready to go. It is accompanied by mint pencil 1707.  I've foiund green and blue to crop up less often than Burgundy and Black, amongst Symphonies.

COMMENTS:  Symphony replaced the vaunted Wahl Skyline, and the barrel shape channels that earlier pen. The two tone metal cap enhances the eye appeal of this streamlined pen.   A pen of good quality, Symphony is somewhat underappreciated in the pendom community today.  This example has very nice flex and is a sound writer

COMMENTS:  Symphony succeeed Skyline during the 1940's. Attractive pens, they are a bit undappreciate by today's collector. Presumably targeting the Parker "51", the Symphony never touched that pens popularity. Still, they are nicely styled pens of good quality. This one has original barrel sticker but has met ink, so is not mint.
