COMMENTS:  Very clean example of Sheaffer's largest pen.  One speck of brassingn on capband (you can see in photo) and usual spot at very tip of clip ball.  Nib has that upturned "Waverly" style point that makes for very smooth writing, particuarly for a fine point. A smidge of the two tone effect is lost on the nib (look at photo by the nibs ink channel). Great writer.

COMMENTS:   Very clean example of Sheaffer's largest pen.    Nib has that upturned "Waverly" style point that makes for very smooth writing, noting this pen offers a plumper line than is typically seen, approaching full medium.  Great writer. Youve probably heard my screed about silver-pearl pens from the 1930s

"Today they are more common and often less expensive than other colors. They are all-told in less demand today because the pale color shows celluloid discoloration more than other colors and because unlike gold-filled trim the chrome trim cannot readily be polished once worn or pitted.  My assertion is they are common because back in the day, when clean, they were stunningly lovely pens and thus sold well. They are  uncommon today  in very clean condition "

This one shows why people bought pens of this color back in the day. Crisp color. Clean trim. Top 5% or so for condition.

COMMENTS:  Scarce pen in great condition. Lever-fill. Roseglow saw a relatively short production run. Model shmooze to follow, but basically this is the 2nd largest size in highest level trim. Were this an oversized Rosie with this trim and condition, it would run $1500+. Nice two tone nib with the upswept "Waverly" style point, writing a quite smooth typical firm Sheaffer fine-medium line. Excellent trim. Great color. Shar imprint. Cartouche on the "Jeweler's" wide-lined ap-and are neatly engraved.  PENCIL is a toss in. The clip wiggles. The cap is not tight enough to readily work the functioning internal mechanism (this could be fixed by having a repair guy crimp the metal guts). Pencil offered free with pen.  If I still have the set next time I get to a pen show, I'l ask one of the guys to work on the pencil.

The model/cluster/variant is interesting. The wide-lined factory original "Jeweler's" cap-banfd was found on a marked minority of Balances. I have discovered evidence that Sheaffer called this one the Deluxe Statemen (vs regular Statesman with smooth thinner capband). Rose Glow already is a tough color. Finding a full size pen with this band and finding the pen in great shape are real challenges.

COMMENTS:  A gem. Great writer with an extra fine point that is particularly smooth. The nib is not flexible but has bit more "sproing" to it thn most Sheaffer nails, and with pressure loosens up ink flow a bit to hit full fine. Acts semi-flex though there is no real separation of tines.

This is the long standard model that would gain the name Admiral in 1938, when Sheaffer began offering model names. Non-White Dot cap. $5 original price. Feather Touch #5 Nib. This is the second largest size Balance.

You've heard my screed about gray pens from the 1930s:

"Today they often are  more common and often less expensive than other colors.

Great color, very clear visualated gripping section. Superb nib. Cap trim is just superb with mirror finish. Chrome plating on lever intact but with light wear.

COMMENTS:  One of my few claims to fame in collectable pendom is being the discoverer of Sheaffer literature identifying the name Lahn for this pattern celluoid, one which has gold-tone metallic threads buried deep in the clear celluloid, hiding under the colored plastic stripes, making for a remarkable visual depth to the plastic.  Found so far only in standard (full girth) size. Three colors. Several "brand" imprints can be found along with some tweaks on trim and end-color.  Generally, the weak point is the trim. Whether plated insted of "filled", whether thinner gold-filled than other Sheaffer pens,  or whether in general  found more worn as the pen was inexpensive ($1.25 or so) back in the day and thus was used with more abandon... pens typically are found with clean plastic but worn trim.    Sheaffer sub-brand pens are some of the relatively few pens I will routinely consider for after-market plating. The solid gold nib is a bit small relative to the pen's size, consistent with its original affordable price point. This one has sound original trim. I'm overdue for a short profile on Lahn Sheaffers, and will add one soon, with a link from any Lahn pens for sale.

This one grades Etra Fine. It's all there save for some speckling of the chrome filled trim. It also I fear is sold, having found a new home at the SF Pen Show where i'd brought it before managing to upload this update.

COMMENTSThe model/cluster/variant is interesting. The wide-lined factory original "Jeweler's" cap-banfd was found on a marked minority of Balances. I have discovered evidence that Sheaffer called this one the Deluxe Premier (vs regular Premier  with smooth thinner capband).  Oversized Black pens of this sort do not turn up so often.  I doubt I've seen ten during the last decade.

This one is has some strengths and weaknesses.  The flaws are limited to slight play (movement) of the clip, just a bit left to right.  The speckling showing on the gold-filled trim I think is tarnish not brassing, as it is limited to recesses (not the high points) of the lined cap-band.  Plastic is excellent. Nib is a superb two-tone extra fine to fine point with that upturned "Waverly" character that makes most Balances nice writers.

COMMENTS:  The non-White Dot full size pen (one size shy of the largest/oversized pen) in what many consider Sheaffers most desirable color. Short production run rendered it relatively scarce.  This one cost $5 originally, and packs the proper Feather Touch #5 nib. A very smooth extra fine point it has a bit of "sproinginess" that allows line to broaden slightly with pressure, though there is no frank tine seperation.  Superb condition. Great color. Great writer.

COMMENTSThe model/cluster/variant is interesting. The wide-lined factory original "Jeweler's" cap-band was found on a marked minority of Balances. These White Dot pens were marked as Deluxe versions of the catalogued pens with smooth thin cap-band. I've written about them before, for an article I gave Paul Erano for his magazine a few years ago.

This one pops. Clean all around. Very smooth fine-XF point with the upturned "Waverly" point for which these are well known. Great transparency, crisp trim, restored with the proper modified Tardif method. The cap-band (as with most of these pens, which were targeted as gifts) is neatly engraved with initials.

COMMENTS:   Gray with Red Veins is a high cachet color in the Sheaffer universe. Often discolored even crazed, at risk for hairline cap-lip cracks, finding clean specimens is a nontrivial venture. This one is quite sharp, with no brassing, great color, no crazing or cracks, razor imprint,  and clean threads. The flat-ball clip on this one is the second clip style to appear on this color Balance.  Smooth proper Sheaffer #3 nib.

COMMENTS:  Sheaffers first stab at clear-barrels and plunger-fillers, done before introducing that filling system to its high-line Balance series. A large clear ink window was offered, to show off the ink filling system and storage capacity. This is the middle size, with typical Sheaffer standard diameter.   This one is in ok shape. Color, trim and transparency are in sound  "extra fine" condition. Bit of brassing. Bit of ambering. Sharp imprint. Clean nib.  It has had the full and proper $40 plunger-fill restoration and carries function warranty.  In  this condition I'd typically offer this one around $175, but when the cap closes (nice snug and smooth closure) it rests a bit cockeyed on cap, just  a bit off center. Big gold nib has proper "Vacuum-Fil" markings and  is semi-flex. The pen  writes nicely.

COMMENTS:  Evocatively named about 9 years ago (not by me) by a collector online, this sub-brand cluster by Sheaffer is best known for its interesting Celluloid, what with its gaping black "mouths" floating in an evil miasma.  Green and Gray pens were offered. Several imprints and trim/nib tweaks can be found. I offered an article a few years back in one of the print magazines.  This one is well better than average. Good color. No crazing of the plastic. Mild trim brassing.

COMMENTS:  Another focus in my own collection, this unusual Celluloid pattern has been termed, "Circuit Board" by collectors, perhaps for obvious reasons. This is the oversized and Deluxe (wide and lined cap-band, two tone nib) version, king of the kill.  Plastic is superb. Clip, lever and cap-band plating is excellent. The end plates (very top and bottom) are well brassed, a common finding on these. Nib is the divided type, meant to be two-tone, but the white-metal plating is gone, rendering it monotone. This one sold at the SF Pen Show a couple weeks ago, before I could get the update online. Sorry on that.

COMMENTS: In mainstream Sheaffer Balance collecting, the Rose Glow oversized pen is king of the series, and impressive and quite scarce pen. And, while tthere are a couple items maybe of greater cachet to the most advanced collectors-- rare solid-gold Masterpiece pens and some off-catalogue material-- the Rose Glow holds a special place no doubt

This one features a superb Ron Zorn plunger-fill restoration.  The pen is Excellent-ish. Consider the following regarding why it isn't priced at $1300-1400 or so.  The cap is just grand.   Clean trim and plastic. The barrel has very clean plastic with razor-sharp Sheaffer imprint and with clean blind cap. The gripping section (generic black) has couple light toothies.  But, the big drop in price is because the barrel has significant darkening of the Celluloid. Plunger variants hold ink in the barrel not in a sac.  This pen likely had ink resting against one side for 50 years. The result is a barrel that shows decent original color stripes (as seen in the big pic and the small pic at left) but which is nearly black (amber transparent when backlit) on alternating sides.  Color has impact, even though it is not part of grading/cosmetics.  So, a verrrry clean Rose Glow with barrel darkening.  If someone wanted the cap alone, I'd likely ask $700 or so. The whole pen, with superb fine-medium point and a Ron Zorn restoration for $875 seems more than fair. Time will tell.

COMMENTSA very uncommon variant, one I seem to have introduced to the awareness of our cadre of online flat-top Sheaffer collectors, when I found my first of these a couple years ago.  All catalogued 3-25  orange pens are standard girth.  This one is slender girth, and short.  I have identified at least  5 variants of the slender orange flat-end Sheaffers. Typical high-clip long and short pens, off-catalogue "late" low-set hump clips again long and short, and finally a short ringtop  This one of course is later style with the low-set clip.

Pen grades fine. Clean trim and nice nib, there are some fine scratches to plastic and couple quite light tooth marks and scattered tiny pin/pock marks at back end of barrel.   Below are three of these uncatalogued slender orange pens from my own collection. Note the two possible clip positions.

COMMENTS: When, a mere year or so ago, in my casual pursuit of orange "Flat Top" Sheaffers, I began to encounter (uncatalogued) slender pens, I met some measure of disbelief from some of my Sheaffer-oriented pen friends who had not seen such a critter, knew it was not catalogued, and doubted I had correctly identified the pen. Since then, he has come around to a proper worldview, though ;)  The catalogues we have show only standard-girth orange plastic pens.  SInce my first find I've tracked down 5 variants: long and short clip pens with both typical high-riding 1920's catalogue-style clips (like this pen, though of course not catalogued as Slender), long and short clip pens with the low-riding post-catalogue-era "1930's" styling, and... a ringtop. This one is the early style high-clip pen.

COMMENTS:  The Autograph family found among Sheaffer's 1929-1941 Balance series feature solid gold wide trim ring and usually 14k solid clip as well (some standard size pens were offered with gold-filled clip as a slightly less pricey option). This one is an early style pen with full ball clip (note the full ball clip lacks a Sheaffer imprint, while all catalogued non-Autograph pens with full-ball clip have "Sheaffer's" markings on the clip.  This one is very clean. COMMENTS  in 1940-41 Sheaffer offered Skyboy variants of three Balance models. Save for clips marked 'Skyboy" and in 2 of 3 cases with increased  prices from usual models (making barrel swaps tough as many barrels are stamped -- in cents-- with original price), the pens were regular Balances. Sheaffer trumpeted them as being particularly safe for flying, but no one has yet found any mechanical differences from regular Balance. These most often are found with the over-the-top military clip, but long and short slender pens with standard clip also were documented.   This one is  in nice shape, noting the barrel has been personalized, "Jean Jung".   Very smooth writer, especially for an extra-fine point.

COMMENTS  Balance is the second most prevalent pen in my personal collection. The series saw frantic evolution and might be the only pen series to run the entire 1930's. It offers many collecting options to collectors.  Statesman took its name in 1938, but the features of that model had been around since the very beginning: standard girth, full length, non-Lifetime nib of respectable size. The pen itself is quite clean. The nib, with smooth fine point retains its two tone effect, but has many surface scratches. Had I noticed that pre-restoration, I likely would have had the nib swapped. I've knocked $20 from price of pen. Nice writer. Good eye-appeal.

COMMENTS:   Following the Parker Vacumatic, Sheaffer Balance sees the largest representation in my own collection. Those two series targetted similar niches during the 1930's and were in fierce competition. This is the big one, in a relatively early color.  Color well better than average showing ambering on just couple pearly panels. Trim is clean noting bit of brassing at top of clip and on the clip ball. Smooth Fine Firm nib.

COMMENTS Yeah, Balance is my second most collected pen after Parker Vacumatic. Just picked up this gem. Figured I'd share it for show n' tell, though it will remain with me until (if/when) i ever decide to liquidate my Balance collection. Pretty thing, no?

COMMENTS:  Balance is the second most prevalent pen in my personal collection. The number of variants gives Vacumatic a run for the money. The Petit model is relatively early product found in colors believed produced from 1929-1932. The girth is that of a Slender model, but the pen is markedly shorter in all proportions.  This wee charmer is in nice shape, with sound imprint and with clean trim. This is a  white dot Lifetime model. I had the cap rotated to wrong position for the photo.

COMMENTS:  Balance is the second most prevalent pen in my personal collection. The number of variants gives Vacumatic a run for the money. This one has very clean plastic. The cap band  has bit of brassing at edges here n' there.

COMMENTS:  Balance is the 2nd most prevalent pen in my personal collection, after Vacumatic. Many variants out there. This one- in Jade celluloid- is a "first year" Balance in standard size, longer than later standard pens. This one has excellent color, probably a shade away from perfection, and quite even .   Clip-ball brassing is noted as well as speck or two on cap-band. Nice example of the first Balance.

COMMENTS: Jade is amongst the first three Balance colors dating to 1939. This is the largest catalogued non white dot Jade variant as the oversized pen has the white dot.   Superb color with hint of yellowing to part of barrel just by lever, as per the pic. Clear sac placed for color preservatoin.

Point:  Fine Imprint:  Exc Size: 5 1/4" 13.2cm
PRICE: $210
COMMENTS:  Recognized by those who know this one is a kosher "Semi Stubby" standard girth model. Might be the first I've had that features the 1000 price code imprint, suggesting relatively late issue for this anomalous pen. The cap is stubby standard length, similar to that found on Stubby Standard pens better known in earlier colors. The barrel is not as short as the Stubby but also is not as long as the full Standard. It is... intermediate. Our speculation is that this sort of pen represented attempt to use up remaining stubby caps.  For somone who wants an esoteric Balance, something that does not come along every day.

Pen 2592 Sheaffer Balance OS Pencil AUTOGRAPH $100
Oversized Marine Green marbled. Solid Gold Trim. Early 1930's

Point:  NA Imprint:  Nearmint Size: 5 3/4" 14.6 cm
PRICE: $100
COMMENTS:   Autograph- solid gold trim, hallmarked 14k at clip, capband and cone.  Pens cost $25 back  when typical OS pen was $8.75 and one months Relief Payment from the gov't during the Great Depression ran $10. A non trivial pen. This pencil is enhanced by lack of engraving on the cap-band, uncommon on these gift/executive pens.  The flaw is  translucency and stress marks/crazing at top of pencil. Priced down to reflect. Nice color. Clean trim.

COMMENTS: Pencil to match the big pen.  Tiny speckling of brassing. Tiny initials heat stamped neatly in barrel "S.H.". Has common slight gap between top and bottom pieces resulting from 75 years of gradual celluloid shrinkage on the metal.

COMMENTSAdvertised by Sheaffer in some of the earlier colors but also found uncatalogued in some middle-era colors, the tiny Golf Pencil (vest pocket pencil) fits well into Balane collections, indeed carrying more collector cachet than do many of the typical full-length pencils.

Gripping section with excellent clarity. Clearly, the barrel is bit lighter than the cap. Proper Feather Touch nib. Typical firm fine-medium point. Nice ink flow.
