Pen 4100 Z: Sheaffer Balance Autograph (Solid Gold Trim)   $595
Red Veined Gray with Solid Gold Trim. Standard Size

Metal: Exc
Color:  Exc .CLICK FOR LARGER PIC
Nib condition: Exc
Threads: Perfect clarity: NA
Point: FXF Imprint:  Exc Size: 5 1/2" 13.9 cm
PRICE: $595
COMMENTS: A frankly rare Balance variant in nice condition. The Autograph line references Balances with solid gold trim, generally found in black plastic (early Marine Green also not too hard to find). In Gray Pearl (red veined gray) I've fewer than 10 the past 20 years, split evenly between this long-standard size and the oversized pens. Clean example. XF to XXF point. An "advanced" pen within the Balance series.

Point: XF-Fine Imprint:  Exc Size: 4 1/8" 10.5 cm

COMMENTS: The mottled Celluloid Sheaffer called Blue was different in pattern as well as color from anything else in the Sheaffer line. Offered around 1931-2 it could be had only as third line (3-25 nib or later #3 nib) slender pens, either long-slender or Petite (extra-short slender). The color was also offered (rare today) as non-Balance Sheaffer Junior.  The Petite line offers charm in general, beyond Blue, as it is relatively uncommon and particularly charming. It channels a bit of the magic of other tiny models, such as Parker's Duofold Vest Pocket model and outprices typical slender ladies' models. This one is quite nice. Color is excellent, top 5-10%, as most in this color have seen the blue fade to a drab gray-blue. Pencil has bit of lightening of some of the black panels.  Freshly restored, this one writes a nice very fine line. It has no real flex, but is responsive enough to give just a hint of line shading with a bit of pressure. There is a pin mark/pin-ding to bottom edge of cap-band just below clip ball (shown in pic). Nib is Sheaffer #3 which I think kicked in just after this model was sold (usually 3-25 nib), but the edges are fuzzy enough this could have been factory with the tail end of production. In any case, the #3 nib and 3-25 nib are same tier, size, and value today.  Neat little set not often on the market.

COMMENTS: Balance is the second most prevalent pen in my personal collection, and perhaps you can see why, Statesman (long-standard, White Dot, Lifetime nib) is the 2nd largest Balance, same length but mm or so thinner than the oversized Premier. As with Vacumatic Major, this model offers good mix of price and size for entry to collecting the series. Gem condition with very smooth truly extra-fine point. Nice mirror finish to the two tone nib.

COMMENTS:  Original Crest (1937-1941) has a lot going for it, and long has traveled a bit under the collecting radar. I won't try to repeat my entire article on this pen done for Fountain Pen Journal- (link), but Paul might still have copies of Issue 1.2 available.  Long and erroneously called "1st year Crest" by collectors, this series dates to 1937-1941. The flush metal cap and the hourglass section with distal threads were novel. The look was borrowed by Parker in 1940 for the Vacumatic Imperial.  Pens could be had as lever-filler with opaque barrel (as is this one) or plunger-filler, with partially transparent barrel.  Lever pens make for easier restoration.  These are hard to find without cap-dings, which cannot be removed readily (as  Parker 51 dents can be removed).  This is the larger of the two original Crest models and ran $13.75 originally. This pen dates probably  to 1939-1941, as the cap has lines all around without an open space (cartouche) for engraving and as it lacks the pin in the gripping section. This one is clean. No dents in cap. nice transparency in gripping section. Clear mirror-finish tw tone nib. Smooth realllly fine point (Extra Fine). I have an extensive collection of Original Crest as well as 1940s "TRIUMPH" Sheafffers. This probably is the cleanest original Crest I've had chance to offer on the website. It kills me a bit that it prices a bit under a slew of well more prevalent late 1950s Sheaffer Snorkels, but the market is the market.

Metal: Exc+ Color:  Exc .CLICK FOR LARGER PIC

Size: 5.5", 14cm
PRICE: $650
COMMENTS: A special creature. If you know what it is, realize this is the first I've had for sale (I own a few after 20 years acollecing) and skip the discussion. For those new to this sort, note that Sheaffer made oversized Balances typically with gold-filled trim. Upgrading to the model called Autograph (yes that was the model name), the price bumped from $10 to $25 and one received a wider cap-ring that was solid and hallmarked 14k gold along with a clip of similarly hallmarked gold.  Autographs are not rare, though have good cachet and value.  The uber-Autograph is an entirely different beast. The cap ring is huge compared even to Autograph's and of course is of hallmarked 14k gold. I doubt I've seen a dozen all told since I started collecting Balance. All have been black save for one in mottled Marine Green, which I also own. We speculate these were special order pens targeting awards, gifts and such.  This variant is the King of the black Balances, far more rare than, say, even Rose Glow oversized, but it also is more esoteric, appealing to a smaller audience. But, if you dabble at collecting "advanced" Balances. It's overdue to be featured in the Black Pen Society. It gives me agita to think that this rarity underprices a modern Montblanc 149, but what can one do...

This example is very clean. It saw little to no use and pushes for near mint conidtion. Gripping section has superb transparency. Nib has mirror two tone finish and nice quite fine point, a smooth writer. Plastic is clean. Imprint is great.  I had this restored couple years ago. I will delay shipping until mid-late Feb as I need to put a dab of orange shellac on the gripping section. If i an order some will do that next week at work. Otherwise will have restorer do at the LA Pen Show in couple weeks. Reserve this one now

COMMENTS: Most Flat-top Black Sheaffer's from the 1920s-1930s have a thinner smooth cap-band. This one is unusually wide. I've seen just a couple-few like this over the years, vs hundreds with the typical cap-band. A bonus for dedicated Sheafferers. Clean condition. Hint/ghost of brassing at very lower edge of cap-band, which took my loupe to see. Sharp imprints, nice tight clip, and sound manufacturer's imprint

COMMENTS: Sheaffer did a fine job with the classic 1920s "flat top" look. After moving from hard rubber to Celluloid, the earliest black OS pens had single cap-band. Green I know switched to double band in late 1920s, and perhaps black did too; I need to review my collection. With the "late" OS's from the a1930s, a low-set clip and single cap-band ruled again. This one is mid-late 1920s. Clean OS nib. Clean trim. Clean imprint. Not bad for 90 years aold. Remarkably fine point, pushing XXF or Accountant rather than just XF

COMMENTS: Sheaffer Balance is the second most prevalent fountain pen in my own collection, following Parker's Vacumatic. Top quality pen tha spanned the entire 1930s, the black oversized model (a full 9/16" outer diameter at cap lip) was the classic "executive's pen".  I own a number of different variants and always am happy to offer some for sale. This one has clean plastic, imprint and clip. Under 5x loupe there is hint of brassing at very edge of cap-band. Write a firm fine line. Nib is a proper-size two-tone Sheaffer nib, but likely dates to about 10 years after the pen, as it does not have "Lifetime" marking but does have "14k" marking, both later features

COMMENTS: The military (over-the-top) clip Balances were introduced near the end of the Balance's 12-ish year run. The clip allowed flap shirt pockets to remain closed while holding pen.  I've written about them before online, and I have a nice spread in my personal collection, including some quite unusual variants. But, I've not offered many for sale over the years. This one is the large model as high-line White Dot pen, the first Sheaffer to be called Valiant, a name that would be used again and again for years to come.

This one all told is quite clean, with minimal plastic wear, unbrassed trim and sharp manufacturer's imprint. It writes well

The nib should be two tone, and this one is monotone. It would be odd for such a clean nib and pen to have lost the plating on the nib from wear or polishing, but obviously I cannot insist it left the factory this way. A small thing.

Smooth extra-fine point.  Shipping Delay (need bit of shellac to gripping section)

COMMENTSA very crisp plunger-fill oversized Balance, relatively scarce in Carmine Celluloid. Clean plastic and trim, sharp Sheaffer barrel imprint, clean nib and excellent amber barrel trasparency (plunger-fill pens featured clear barrel stripes, unlike lever-fill pens)  Plunger-fill Balances, eschewed in the early days of our hobby due to the challenge in getting them up and running, have come into their own the past ten years due to new restoration techniques. These hold hefty ink volumes. This one is freshly restored, having been done the proper way. A very clean pen with smooth fine (leaning toward extra fine) point.

COMMENTS: Balance is the second most prevalent pen in my own collecting, having filled a niche in the 1930s similar to my primary focus, the Parker Vacumatic. Almost all points about Balance collecting carry caveats, but generally Rose Glow is considered the most desirable color, particularly in oversized, which is quite hard to find. This one is standard size, as long as the oversized but a smidgeon more slender. Offered 1936-8 in this size (or was 1937 the end... must check), the standard diameter pen could be had White Dot (Lifetime nib $10 price) which would take name Statesman in 1938 or as non-White Dot (Feather Touch nib $5 price), which would be granted the name Admiral in 1938.  This one is Admiral.  It pops. Clean color, trim, imprint and nib. If this were the White Dot overized in this condition we'd be looking at $1200-1400. Save a millimeter or so in diameter and a grand in your wallet.

COMMENTSThe model/cluster/variant is interesting. The wide-lined factory original "Jeweler's" cap-banfd was found on a marked minority of Balances. I have discovered evidence that Sheaffer called this one the Deluxe Premier (vs regular Premier  with smooth thinner capband).  Oversized Black pens of this sort do not turn up so often.  I doubt I've seen ten during the last decade.

This one is has some strengths and weaknesses.  The flaws are limited to slight play (movement) of the clip, just a bit left to right.  The speckling showing on the gold-filled trim I think is tarnish not brassing, as it is limited to recesses (not the high points) of the lined cap-band.  Plastic is excellent. Nib is a superb two-tone extra fine to fine point with that upturned "Waverly" character that makes most Balances nice writers.

COMMENTS:   Gray with Red Veins is a high cachet color in the Sheaffer universe. Often discolored even crazed, at risk for hairline cap-lip cracks, finding clean specimens is a nontrivial venture. This one is quite sharp, with no brassing, great color, no crazing or cracks, razor imprint,  and clean threads. The flat-ball clip on this one is the second clip style to appear on this color Balance.  Smooth proper Sheaffer #3 nib.

COMMENTSA very uncommon variant, one I seem to have introduced to the awareness of our cadre of online flat-top Sheaffer collectors, when I found my first of these a couple years ago.  All catalogued 3-25  orange pens are standard girth.  This one is slender girth, and short.  I have identified at least  5 variants of the slender orange flat-end Sheaffers. Typical high-clip long and short pens, off-catalogue "late" low-set hump clips again long and short, and finally a short ringtop  This one of course is later style with the low-set clip.

Pen grades fine. Clean trim and nice nib, there are some fine scratches to plastic and couple quite light tooth marks and scattered tiny pin/pock marks at back end of barrel.   Below are three of these uncatalogued slender orange pens from my own collection. Note the two possible clip positions.

COMMENTS: When, a mere year or so ago, in my casual pursuit of orange "Flat Top" Sheaffers, I began to encounter (uncatalogued) slender pens, I met some measure of disbelief from some of my Sheaffer-oriented pen friends who had not seen such a critter, knew it was not catalogued, and doubted I had correctly identified the pen. Since then, he has come around to a proper worldview, though ;)  The catalogues we have show only standard-girth orange plastic pens.  SInce my first find I've tracked down 5 variants: long and short clip pens with both typical high-riding 1920's catalogue-style clips (like this pen, though of course not catalogued as Slender), long and short clip pens with the low-riding post-catalogue-era "1930's" styling, and... a ringtop. This one is the early style high-clip pen.

COMMENTS:  The Autograph family found among Sheaffer's 1929-1941 Balance series feature solid gold wide trim ring and usually 14k solid clip as well (some standard size pens were offered with gold-filled clip as a slightly less pricey option). This one is an early style pen with full ball clip (note the full ball clip lacks a Sheaffer imprint, while all catalogued non-Autograph pens with full-ball clip have "Sheaffer's" markings on the clip.  This one is very clean. Obviously it has been... autographed. An executive's pen from back in the day.

COMMENTS  in 1940-41 Sheaffer offered Skyboy variants of three Balance models. Save for clips marked 'Skyboy" and in 2 of 3 cases with increased  prices from usual models (making barrel swaps tough as many barrels are stamped -- in cents-- with original price), the pens were regular Balances. Sheaffer trumpeted them as being particularly safe for flying, but no one has yet found any mechanical differences from regular Balance. These most often are found with the over-the-top military clip, but long and short slender pens with standard clip also were documented.   This one is  in nice shape, noting the barrel has been personalized, "Jean Jung".   Very smooth writer, especially for an extra-fine point.

COMMENTS  Balance is the second most prevalent pen in my personal collection. The series saw frantic evolution and might be the only pen series to run the entire 1930's. It offers many collecting options to collectors.  Statesman took its name in 1938, but the features of that model had been around since the very beginning: standard girth, full length, non-Lifetime nib of respectable size. The pen itself is quite clean. The nib, with smooth fine point retains its two tone effect, but has many surface scratches. Had I noticed that pre-restoration, I likely would have had the nib swapped. I've knocked $20 from price of pen. Nice writer. Good eye-appeal.

COMMENTS Yeah, Balance is my second most collected pen after Parker Vacumatic. Just picked up this gem. Figured I'd share it for show n' tell, though it will remain with me until (if/when) i ever decide to liquidate my Balance collection. Pretty thing, no?

Pen 2863-M  Sheaffer Balance Petit ("vest pocket")  $120
Black Celluloid. Lifetime (white dot).

PRICE: $120
COMMENTS:  Balance is the second most prevalent pen in my personal collection. The number of variants gives Vacumatic a run for the money. The Petit model is relatively early product found in colors believed produced from 1929-1932. The girth is that of a Slender model, but the pen is markedly shorter in all proportions.  This wee charmer is in nice shape, with sound imprint and with clean trim. This is a  white dot Lifetime model. I had the cap rotated to wrong position for the photo.

COMMENTS:  Balance is the second most prevalent pen in my personal collection. The number of variants gives Vacumatic a run for the money. This one has very clean plastic. The cap band  has bit of brassing at edges here n' there.

COMMENTS:  Balance is the 2nd most prevalent pen in my personal collection, after Vacumatic. Many variants out there. This one- in Jade celluloid- is a "first year" Balance in standard size, longer than later standard pens. This one has excellent color, probably a shade away from perfection, and quite even .   Clip-ball brassing is noted as well as speck or two on cap-band. Nice example of the first Balance.

COMMENTS: Jade is amongst the first three Balance colors dating to 1939. This is the largest catalogued non white dot Jade variant as the oversized pen has the white dot.   Superb color with hint of yellowing to part of barrel just by lever, as per the pic. Clear sac placed for color preservatoin.

Pen 2577TB Sheaffer Balance Golden Pearl $210
Uncommon and Uncatalogued Semi-Stubby Standard Variant.

Metal: Exc Color:  Exc CLICK FOR LARGER PIC
Nib condition: NM
Thread: perfect clarity:  NA
Point:  Fine Imprint:  Exc Size: 5 1/4" 13.2cm
PRICE: $210
COMMENTS:  Recognized by those who know this one is a kosher "Semi Stubby" standard girth model. Might be the first I've had that features the 1000 price code imprint, suggesting relatively late issue for this anomalous pen. The cap is stubby standard length, similar to that found on Stubby Standard pens better known in earlier colors. The barrel is not as short as the Stubby but also is not as long as the full Standard. It is... intermediate. Our speculation is that this sort of pen represented attempt to use up remaining stubby caps.  For somone who wants an esoteric Balance, something that does not come along every day.

Pen 2592 Sheaffer Balance OS Pencil AUTOGRAPH $100
Oversized Marine Green marbled. Solid Gold Trim. Early 1930's

Overall Grade: VG

Nib condition: NA
Threads:  Exc clarity:  NA
Point:  NA Imprint:  Nearmint Size: 5 3/4" 14.6 cm
PRICE: $100
COMMENTS:   Autograph- solid gold trim, hallmarked 14k at clip, capband and cone.  Pens cost $25 back  when typical OS pen was $8.75 and one months Relief Payment from the gov't during the Great Depression ran $10. A non trivial pen. This pencil is enhanced by lack of engraving on the cap-band, uncommon on these gift/executive pens.  The flaw is  translucency and stress marks/crazing at top of pencil. Priced down to reflect. Nice color. Clean trim.

Pen 3329:  Sheaffer Balance Oversize Pencil 1936-41 $95

COMMENTS: Pencil to match the big pen.  Tiny speckling of brassing. Tiny initials heat stamped neatly in barrel "S.H.". Has common slight gap between top and bottom pieces resulting from 75 years of gradual celluloid shrinkage on the metal.

COMMENTSAdvertised by Sheaffer in some of the earlier colors but also found uncatalogued in some middle-era colors, the tiny Golf Pencil (vest pocket pencil) fits well into Balane collections, indeed carrying more collector cachet than do many of the typical full-length pencils.
