Sheaffer Connaisseur
CLICK FOR LARGER PIC

Sheaffer Grand Connaisser, plain Connaisseur, and Sheaffer-for-Levenger Connaisseur. The for-Levengers first series featured  translucent/transparent  "Seas" colors, and  the second series had palladium trim. Sheaffer manufactured the Levenger variants from 1998-2001 or so.  All pens have solid gold nibs, with those found with the Levengers second series having a white finish.  Grand Connaisseur has two-tone gold nib.

These are cartridge/converter filling, and all pens sold in this cluster save one have converters, these days a $20 value each.

Matching ballpoint pens (not illustrated) also are offered. The last Connaisseur update saw pens move quickly.

Sheaffer Targa
CLICK FOR LARGER PIC

Sheaffer's Targa saw production from 1976 through the end of the 1990s and offered a hefty range of finishes.  In standard size ("Classic") and slender ("Slimline"), Gary Ellison notes > 70 finishes and > 120 pens counting finishes found in both sizes.  I actually found some prototype/low-run finishes he has not handled, but that's an article for another day...

sAll the pens in this group are New Old Stock, purchased from a liquidation by a Sheaffer Dealer. All include Sheaffer converters (pens are cartridge/converter fillers). The finishes above are somewhat "better" for the most part.

5 3965 Diamond Pattern Gold-plated (1970s) Extra Fine condition with light wear and with couple edge dings (just a hint of blunting at edges of barrel bottom. Ultra fine point that is a bit toothy (picked up on writing testing for this list).  Might be the finest point modern Sheaffer I've handled, but probably would benefit from a nib-meister.  Takes cartrdige/converter but lacks converter. If I find one or buy a few more I'll amend this ad. Anyway, if this one had smooth point and converter and had slightly more crisp condition it would run $180 or so. Figure $110 as is, and you can send it to the nib guys. If it doesn't fly off the shelf, I'll likely send it out in January for a nib tweak. Solid gold nib.

Tray 1016: Sheaffer Legacy. 1996-2000 or so
CLICK FOR LARGER PIC

COMMENTS:  Legacy really is a legacy, bringing into modernity the form of Sheaffer's vaunted PFM (1959-1963+), Legacy was released in 1996, featuring what appears to be a Touchdown filling system though featuring an internal converter activated via Touchdown-like action. Later pens would see conventional cartridge/converter. All here have the more appealing pseudo-Touchdown system. The Green/Red/Blue Lacque pens are very early issue, not seen very often these days.

Pen 3492  Sheaffer Valor Fountain Pen  $225

Overall Grade:  Extra Fine
Metal: Fine Color: NA
Nib condition: Nearmint
Threads: Perfect clarity: NA
Point:  Fine-Medium Imprint: NA Size5 1/16 " 13 cm PRICE: $225
COMMENTS: Done in black acrylic with gold-plated trim and featuring the classic Sheaffer inlaid nib (intro'd 1959) this modern Valor is selling discounted from its $365 at a price of $295 at several online sources.  This near mint example writes a smooth easy line. For old pens I'd consider this a fine-medium, though I suspect to modern collectors it will be viewed as a relatively plump fine point.  Ready to use. Heavily discounted. Includes Sheaffer converter.

COMMENTS: The three Moire colors are amongst my favorite for TARGA.  Requiring 14 coats of translucent  lacquer on metal guilloche, these sparkle. I have one green FP in my personal collection of just two Targas (the other is a prototype color).  Sold six Moire fountain pens during the last couple years. This is the only BP I've stocked, and I have two available now.

COMMENTS:  Lady Sheaffer flies a bit under the radar, overshadowed by general era cohorts, Imperial and Targa.  It is a solid pen of metal construction with various finishes (often fragile) applied to the metal.  This one is unused. It has the better of the two nib-styles-- The mini-Triumph-- in this case. I believe a wide range of finishes can be found, though I do not focus on this series. This is the first I've had in silver-tone metallic with a gold-tone incuse basket-weave pattern of sorts. Very pretty pen.  Nib is medium point palladium-silver.  Takes cartridge/converter but lacks converter now. I likely can track one down for you for additional $15.

COMMENTS Lady Skripsert dates to 1959, a contemporary to the Snorkel, PFM and Lady Sheaffer.  Of sound metal construction, these cartridge/converter pens offered a outre' styling relative to Sheaffer's generally more conservative fare.  The moire (?) pens with girdle of brilliants (diamond like non-diamonds) reside by the top of the ol' cachet pyramind.  This one has no dents.  From (?) shop-wear there are lots of lateral lines running about he pen revealing brighter-still metal beneatt the white pearlescent coating.  Still a clean pen, it is marked down well from the $150--or-so I'd ask for a minty example with perfect coating.  A cartridge can be provided for additional $15.

COMMENTSLady Sheaffer flies a bit under the radar, overshadowed by general era cohorts, Imperial and Targa.  It is a solid pen of metal construction with various finishes (often fragile) applied to the metal. This one is part of a collection of five mint pens in patterns I've never seen before. I am told these represent true prototypes (though the lines sometimes are painfully blurry amongst "prototype", "low run" and "hey it just must be rare if I've never seen one"). This one has gold point of the upturned/buried variety (not "Triumph"). Neat item for one who seeks something unusual from late 1950's Sheaffer.    Includes "aero"-style converter. Also takes cartridges.  This one had no nib assembly (a raw shell) when I found it. I have fitted it with a mint (stickered) nib assembly. The sticker makes for a snug fit, so don't force closed the pen (keep capped loosely) or do remove the section sticker.

I am told these represent true prototypes (though the lines sometimes are painfully blurry amongst "prototype", "low run" and "hey it just must be rare if I've never seen one").  This one in fact is a bit longer than the other Lady Sheaffers I've handled.  This very unusual "organic" pattern appears to be done via a layering of black enamel over gold-tone metal, with the black then randomly abraded (miniature ice-cream scoop?) revealing "bacterial" blots of gold-tone metal.  Neat item for one who seeks something unusual from late 1950's Sheaffer.   Takes cartridge/converter, and I have fitted this one with a mint converter. I also fitted a mint-stickered nib-section assembly to what was just an empty shell, when I'd bought the collection.  The sticker makes for an unduly snug fit, so if you plan to leave the sticker in place, do NOT force closed the pen. If you want to close (and/or use) the pen, i suggest removing the sticker so as not to put too much pressure on the fragile section.

COMMENTS: Clean pair of sterling Imperials. The pencil is i think a different pattern (less steeply angled rhomboids), but hey, it looks good with the pen.

COMMENTS:  I've actually found more of these in Sterling than in gold tone.  Guessing this dates to 1970's. That it is gold filled  (vs gold plated) indicates earlier production, though I don't insist. Very clean elegant pen.
