COMMENTS: Original Duofold ("flat top" and "streamlined", 1920-1935) no doubt is amongst the top five most collected vintage USA pen series.  Originally introduced in red (the Big Red), black pens actually are well  less common than red.   This one is very clean. Superb cap-band trim. Clip clean save for "usual" slight brassing just to clip-ball. Imprint sharp overall with slight lightness at top of "Lucky Curve" banner.  Smooth fine-medium point with bit of "sproing" for a responsive fee. Beautiful pen.

COMMENTS:  This one is a 1940 black Duofold Junior, the larger of the two pens that mark the entry level to vac-fill Duofolds from this era (cheaper Duofolds can be found as button fillers, and more expensive vac-fill pens also were made, albeit not in black in the latter case). It is a "first year" pen from the "striped" Duofold series, though this is the only one (save for opaque black button-fill pens) that lacks conventional stripes.

Black vac-fill Duofolds were made 1940 through perhaps mid 1942, when Junior was phased out. That end point will need to be better defined by observation of more pens. Those made from 1941 and later have typical distinct longitudinal stripes of barrel clarity. But, the 1940 pens have "Shadow Wave" transparency as shown above, a pattern explicitly catalogued only for Vacumatic, not Duofold.

Most black Shadow Wave Duofolds are rough things as most Junior Duofolds have poor preservation of cap-band gold-filled metal (a mm of brassing on a big cap band equals "edge brassing", while a mm of brassing on thin double bands equals "total brassing"). As barrel clarity on most celluloid Parkers suffers severe ambering, most pens of this sort tend to have an unimpressive appearance. To find clean trim and good clarity on a black Duofold Junior (or smaller Sub-Deb) is a grand thing indeed.

This one is in the top five I've handled in ten years. Keep in mind it is not a "brown" Shadow Wave. Those stripes you see are not brown/black variegation, but mark a black pen with transparency showing up as golden color. The gold-filled trim is superb. Manufacturer's imprint is sharp. One superficial mark to plastic above imprint.  Responsive (verging on semi-flex) fine-medium point.

COMMENTS:  A "less common" Streamline Duofold Color. Barrel Ambered, obviously. Cap color Excellent. Clean trim with only the "usual" clip-ball brassing. This one is in the "Basement" as there are two tight cracks in the thread. No effect on function (this is a sac pen and the cap threads perfectly onto the barrel), but a value hit.

COMMENTS:  Overall clean Flat Top Duofold with some.. .interesting... features. The Flat Top styling and non-Lucky-Curve imprint would date the pen to 1928-29, just before the streamlined style kicked in.  Yet, an interesting finding is the classic "upside down" date code on barrel found usually on Vacumatic and on Striped Duofold that suggests 1941 production. Pen has late comb feed. Nib is unusual. Round Vent Hole simple "Lucky Curve" imprint that is unfamiliar to me from 1920's Lucky Curve pens similar in size to Duofold. Late replacement nib?  The nib is rarer than Duofold nib, proper, so i opted to leave it in.  This could be late production piece or late factory repair. Neat pen. Would be full excellent, save that in addition to usual clip ball brassing, there indeed is bit of cap-band brassing, probably  <10% overall.  Nice eye appeal

COMMENTS:  In pendom, size might matter, but bigger is not *always* better than smaller. The extra-small vest pocket Duofold is a model in high demand, well more valuable than middle sized pens, and giving the big-guy a run for the money. This is a charming pen. As you can see, the color on the barrel is not perfect, due to sac/ink fumes, whilst the cap color is superb. Overall excellent cosmetic condition. A nice collector's pen.

COMMENTSA nifty variant, well known to those who know.  In late 1942-early 1943 Parker produced some Vacumatics (including odd size like this one) in the striped celluloid better known from the 1940's Duofold series. These appear about two years after the introduction of the Duofold proper. They feature a Vac nib and Vac-style clip of course, as well as a cap-band unique on plastic of this pattern to these short lived Vacumatics. This "stacked coin" capband is not seen on Duofolds, proper. The pen has a "Vacumatic", not "Duofold", barrel imprint.

This one shows real signs of use, though hardly anything fatal. Color and clarity are sound. Clean nib is a smooth fine point. Plastic is very clean. But... the cap-band cartouche (area meant for engraving) has couple visible nicks. There is some "silvering" (some WWII era pens show silver beneath the gold-fill, instead of brass) and the Vacumatic imprint is weak, showing "parker" well enough but just hint of couple letters of Vacumatic.  Priced about the same as typical striped Duofold Senior, but waaaay more rare.

A strict color hierarchy does not exist for the stripers, but my experience is that the blue-gray is the least frequently encountered color amongst the three colors found in most models. This one has sharp imprint, clean trim, occasional mark on plastic  and a quite fine yet smooth point point.  I will need to have the ink-flow increased  a bit before shipping, based on "final" testing, when i prepped this website update.

England carried on the wide feather clip and deco-band long after the USA had dispensed with them.  This one is bit bigger than the Slimfold but same size as the basic Duofold, leaving me at a loss as to the difference between Victory and Duofold. Different names for different markets?  I plead ignorance (shocking, i know). Capband about 25% brassed. Clean clip. Writes a wet "singing" line that is on the fine edge of Broad.
