| COMMENTS: Well, I'm no Wahlnut, but having handled many Wahls and many in Coral, this model is a bit uncommon I suspect. It is not the short slender "Ladies" model with #2-size nib usually found in ringtop, but is the full size (full girth) standard pen usually found as military clip, with #4-size nib. I don't see many ringtops in this size, though it would not surprise me if this is a regularly cataloged model (i really must pull the catalogs). Clean trim. Sharp imprint (at top of cap), nice color, not quite perfect but excellent and better than most. Silky Wahl Signature (semi-flex) nib that is not wet-noodle but does flex from about fine-medium (would be uber-flex for a modern pen, but is not like, say, a noodle flex Waterman #2 nib). Great pen. Nice writer. | |||

| COMMENTS: Entry level pen to the world of Wahl RCHR. Often found cracked, this one lacks any cracks. Often found worn, this one has very sharp chasing. Often found brassed... well, you get the idea. The diffused light used for the photo obscures the chasing. Later (next day or three) will take a top-lit oblique shot to really show the thing off... assuming it has not been claimed by then :) | |||

| COMMENTS:
Doric was offered by Wahl-Eversharp, a Big Five American pen maker. It
inspired Omas during the 1930s. That maker in turn (until Omas closed
recently) made pens for the next 80 years that channeled Wahl's classic
pen: faceted contour, roller clip, etc  This 2nd-generation
("shell" pattern Celluloid) example is slender sized and dates likely
to the late 1930s, given presence of keyhole nib which is unusual with
two-tone effect (mostly preserved). Wahl also differed from most of the
other big players by offering "white" trim on pens that were not gray.
This Sapphire Shell pen features white gold-filled trim, accounting for
the slightly warmer look (and better wear characteristics) than is
found with the chrome-plated "white" trim pens by the
competition.   Offered both plunger-fill and lever-fill, the
lever fillers (this one is lever-fill) offer easier restorations.
This one is quite clean with superb color, clean trim and imprint,
clean plastic, etc. It writes a very fine line, Extra Fine or perhaps
accountaint. |

| COMMENTS: Very
clean mid-late 1930s Doric in Silver Shell Celluloid. The "white" trim
of Doric was not chrome-plated as with most makers from that era, but
was  white gold-filled. It holds up better and has warmer
look.  This one is clean and has very flexible Wahl adjustable
point. Collector grade all the way |

| COMMENTS: The
Gregg Writing School saw pens made for it by Sheaffer, Wahl-Eversharp
and apparently even Waterman (rare). I've never seen one by Parker. The
flat-top style Wahls are among the earliest of this sort, offered in
Rosewood hard rubber (this one) and in a pearlescent mottled green
Celluloid that Wahl named Kashmir. Even without spotting the Gregg
enamel badge at top of the pen, Wahl flat-top Greggs can be identified
by unique size/clip arrangement, a long (rather than short) slender pen
with military-style clip at top of pen. This one is quite nice and well
better than average. Clean trim rings, no cracks in cap-lip, threads,
or anywhere else. Rich Rosewood color without fading/oxidation. The
"Made in USA" imprint near top of cap is crisp.  There is bit of high point brassing present at top of clip and edges of lever, which you can see in the photo. All the Gregg Wahls of this sort I've handled (probably ten by now) have Wahl-marked nibs. This one writes between XF and Fine. Good pen for the Wahl flat-top collector and Gregg collectors both. Well less common than most Rosewood Wahls. |

| Comments:
Perhaps the most elegant American fountain pen from the 1930s, this
faceted 2nd generation Wahl-Doric packs all the bells and whistles. It
is the largest size amongst three (two diameters made, with two lengths
for standard diameter), as long-standard. It packs the Gold Seal,
pierced-work cap-band, the (in)famous Ink shut-off valve and a monster
#9 Adjustable Nib that flexes better than most Waterman Pink nibs with
which I've played. Clean trim and color. Bright but ambered barrel
transparency.  It has couple light tooth-marks on the blind cap.
Hint of crimp where the big #9 nib was squeezed into the gripping section ( you can see in picture) |

| COMMENTS:
In what I believe is the Check / Unique
pattern, this is a relatively hefty Wahl metal pen,
featuring a sweet Wahl #4 flexible nib that writes a
very smooth Extra Fine line with light touch, flexing
up to Double Broad with an aggressive down stroke. The
flex is not that of a Waterman Pink nib, it's not "wet
noodle", but requires controlled force to do its
thing. Great writer. Condition is outstanding for metal pens from the early-mid 1920s (90 year old pen). The domes and thin beads at top and bottom of pen are clean. There is no personalization on the cartouche. There is no brassing. I do raise question about whether the gripping section (black hard rubber) is replacement. Save for the Console pattern known to associate with a mottled HR section, I tend to believe gripping sections should be metal. I've heard some claims that rubber sections can be found. For now, I will assume the black rubber section is a replacement. The advantage is that close ink exposure won't harm the section, as it can on metal pens. |

Jade Celluloid tends to discolor viciously. This 1929

excellent-- though not perfect-- color preservation,
a  top 10% example easily. Excellent condition

imprint at top of cap.  Barrel is imprinted,
"Mid-Continental Life" neatly, as shown in the photo
above. Killer Wahl-Eversharp Gold-Seal nib marked
"Flexible", it is a near-medium point with a bit of
stub quality (thin cross strokes) that also has a nice
degree of flexibility. A superb writer, no joke. |

Wahl-Eversharp
offered a remarkable range of metal pens from the time
of its taking over Boston Safety in 1917 through at
least the late 1920's. Multiple sizes, patterns
and metals (not limited to the usual Sterling,
Gold-Filled, and Solid Gold, but including White
Gold-Filled and Silver-Filled and even a couple
different tints to the regular Gold-Filled pens) allow
one to assemble a monster collection if he so
chose.  Top quality items, there is potential for
he who chooses to hunt these in completist fashion,
the way others hunt Vacumatic and Balance, to put
together a record collection at relatively reasonable
cost.  Ripple is a better pattern.
You can see the brassing at the very top of pen (the
most severe portion is shown) and a smidge on the high
point of the clip. No dings/dents. The rubber core of
the gripping section  protrudes a smidge behind
its metal overlay, where < 1 mm of metal was lost
to ink exposure over the years. |

| COMMENTS: A "better'" Skyline with a lined all gold-filled barrel/cap. Most of these are found heaviliy dinged. This one has scattered light pin marks to the metal and one small superficial ding to barrel 3mm across. Not "perfect" condition but well better than average. Nice smooth writer. | |||

| COMMENTS: Symphony replaced the vaunted Wahl Skyline, and the barrel shape channels that earlier pen. The two tone metal cap enhances the eye appeal of this streamlined pen. A pen of good quality, Symphony is somewhat underappreciated in the pendom community today. The two-tone wide band and appropriate large nib mark this as the high-line 703 model. Clean pen. | The Symphony succeeded the Skyline during the late 1940's. My experience- such as it is- notes the Gold Filled caps are less common than the white caps, overall. The Slipper Cap was early style. This is the first all gold filled slipper cap pen i've handled. Most are white caps. | |||

| COMMENTS: The Coronet in full GF perhaps is the most "deco" pen to come out of the 1930's. Pencils not so easy to find either. This one is acceptable, though hardly near mint. | COMMENTS: A superb big-boy Doric from mid-late 1930's. See article in Stylus couple months back by Erano with photos by Isaacson. The largest 2nd Gen Doric (cap-band meets cap-lip) is bit thinner than the 1st Gen pens. This one has clean trim. Nib is keyhole style. I "believe" late Dorics (Doric ran to 1940) have these as correct finding, but clearly the nib has less value than an adjustable nib from earlier years. That's been factored in. Clean plastic, with one small scratch near butt end of pen. This is a quite nice example of a not-so-easy-to fine pen. Sweet smooth writer, too. And, that is just dust up by the gold-seal. | |||

| COMMENTS: Wahl's Gold Seal Personal Point pen was its premier series in the late 1920's, a pen of quite high quality. The military clip pen shown is a full-girth pens (essentially a "stubby" model) with #4-size nib, The Wahl nib carries a "Signature" stamp, indicating semi-flex status. Color is better than average thought not perfect, obviously. | |||

| COMMENTS: Equi-Poised is a highly collectable series that saw frantic evolution during its 4 year run. This large pencil shows minimal signs of use, has no brassing and has great color. Still has some of original eraser. The celluloid shows a slight iridescence representing thin layer oxidation from going 80 years without being polish. I like finding that on old celluloid. If you want, I can give it a light modern polish (though you'll lose the oxidation effect). | |||

| COMMENTS:  Note,
please that "Giant Bantam" is a bit of a
tongue-in-cheek name. This
Wahl Oxford is a long thin pen, not "giant" in the
general pendom sense
of the word, but is a rather large version of pen that
generally is a
teeny weeny thing, the Wahl Bantam.  Sharing the

and
spiral-barrel-transparency look of the Bantam, this
one is a bigger
version it, thus "giant".   Barrel clarity is superb. Clean color with bit of translucence at very top of cap. I've had a few of the reds and one green. This is the first brown pen i've found. |

| COMMENTS: Not a little pen, the Military Clip Wahl is full #4 nib size and same diameter as the long standard pen. The short size (squat pen) and high riding clip facilitated use in military shirts (didn't wanna pop the flap). Gold Seal is on the top of the pen. Grand condition with brass-free trim and excellent color. The nib puts it over the top. My crude ruler puts it at about 1.3 mm stub with high flex on top of that. Monster writer. Will try to get nib or writing sample up if i can. One of the funkiest vintage points I've had on the website in months. | |||

The 2nd Generation retains the desirable "Slipper" Cap. | |||

| COMMENTS: Tulip Clip (I always wondered if the TUlip is meant to be a stylized "W") Wahls are less common than those with other style clips. Lapis is a high-cachet color. Tulip Clip pens come in two sizes, with the larger- like this one- well less common than the shorter slender version. Nib is clean correct "Wahl 4" with smooth fine point with real flex, though not nearly a wet-noodle. Color is excellent. Trim is clean. I could go on... | |||

| COMMENTS: A lower line mid-late 1930's Wahl product, similar niche to Parker Parkette. Clean plastic and cap-band with disproportionate plating loss to clip and lever (showing white base metal) not unexpected given the cheaper trim finish. Pen fills and writes with some flex. This
is a first-style Doric in one of the most fragile
colors, Kashmir.
Most out there have crazed and fluoresced. This
one is superb.  Whilst
I'd expect a Gold Seal nib in a Gold Seal (unpunched)
pen, this one has
a non-GS nib (who knows?  Custom request at time,
or later swap) that
is up there with the two  2-3 most interesting
nibs in this latest
website update. It is a Wahl nib correct to era, just
not gold-seal.

Symphony is somewhat
underappreciated in the pendom community today. The
two-tone thin-band
cap marks this as the intermediate model, slotting
between the lower
end 707 and the upper end 703. This one is mint, with a nominal flaw (welcome to the weirdness of pen grading). It has part of price sticker and has never met ink, but it does have a small "dimple" (ding) at very top of cap. Fills well and puts down good line on water testing. May not be returned if inked or dipped, but then it is priced, mint-with-flaw, less than most of the used Symphonies I offer. |

| COMMENTS: Note, please that "Giant Bantam" is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek name. This Wahl Oxford is a long thin pen, not "giant" in the general pendom sense of the word, but is a rather large version of pen that generally is a teeny weeny thing, the Wahl Bantam. Sharing the bulb-filler and spiral-barrel-transparency look of the Bantam, this one is a bigger version it, hence "giant". Clean trim with excellent barrel clarity. There is a bit of translucency at the ends. This is just the third of this sort i've had available during the last 4 years. | |||

This one is, i believe, third generation. A pen of good quality, Symphony is somewhat underappreciated in the pendom community today. The "703" was the high end model regarding price point and trim level. It has the largest nib found on Symphony. The flex nib shows modest, easily controlled flex. It is not a "wet noodle". This pen is, i believe, third generation. It is mint stickered, freshly resaced and ready to go.

Gold Seal is on very top of the pen. The top of the clip, the bottom cap-band and the bottom tassie have some brassing. Rest of trim quite clean. One pin ding on top tassie 90degrees from the clip. This is the fat short pen, not to be confused with the wee skinny ringtop.

Largest size available in most patterns though second
largest size in
Grecian Border. Exceedingly clean pen. Often given as
ifts, this one
must've belonged to a fairly high ranked member in the
petroleum
industry. The pen neatly is stamped, "C.A. Pierce Oil Company,

like OS Wahl flat-tops. Often referred to as "Deco
Band" due to the...
deco... band, the Green/Bronze (Green/Gold, Brazilian
Green) color
generally features a more narrow middle-band, the
"rhomboid" cap-band.
The Wahl Gold Seal nib on this one is marked
"Signature" for semi-flex,
but to my hand seems to be a full flex. There was
overlap. This one is not quite perfect. There is a small superficial mark about 2mm by 2mm on the barrel and a tiny (maybe 1mm) possible sealed hairline vs scratch extending from the very edge of the lever slot on the barrel has been sealed. Cap is very nice. Figure the $250 discount should cover those two tiny marks. |

| COMMENTS:  Moire
Skylines are amongst the most desirable patterns
found.  Five
colors,
three trim styles and two sizes can be found- at least
i believe all
permutations can be found in all colors- allowing
potentially 30 pens
to be hunted. This is a full size set in green moire. The pen is a clean one with slight edge brassing and a superb fine-med very flexible nib. The pencil has a brassed cone and seems not to be feeding ink (probably clogged). I'm tossing it in with the pen as it would be a shame to just throw it out. Great Nib. |

was Wahl-Eversharp's name for this budget-Skyline
identifiable by the
lack of the over-the-derby clip.  Often lumped in
with the
Skyline
series, this style pen indeed is more uncommonly found
than is the
Skyline proper.  This one is done in a nice royal
blue. |

| COMMENTS: Taxonomy of the Equi-Poised is... nontrivial. This is the early "torpedo" shape which mythology says gave Sheaffer a conniption. This one has the punched seal, indicative of late release as non-guaranteed pen, but... it does pack a gold seal nib. Color is superb. Only flaw is loss of a fraction of the final thread round where threads meet gripping section. Closure of the cap is absolutely normal. | |||

| COMMENTS: I'm fond of Wahl metal pens- availability of variety of sizes, patterns, metals makes for a charming collecting experience. "Dazzle" is one of my favorites, providing a coruscating lustre that is not well represented by the photo. A very clean example, it has the proper metal section (many have been replaced by black sections which is hardly fatal but still...) and has a nice XF nib with bit of flex. Pretty pen. | |||

This one is the cleanest i've owned or handled and has no crazing or fluorescence of that all-too-sensitive green celluloid. Barrel clarity is superb. A nice pen for those who hunt some of the funky stuff put out by Wahl. | |||

| COMMENTS:  Wahl
produced tiny "Bantam" pens with # 0 nibs, bulb filler
and $1 price
tag.  Wahl's Oxford line generally was a second
tier Wahl
product,
analagous to Sheaffer's WASP.  Some Oxford pens
were very high
quality, essentially tweaked or re-badged Wahl's proper.
Others were of
lower quality.  Some unusual plastics and contours
appeared
amongst the Oxford pens. This one is an odd duck. A fairly large Oxford, it channels the Bantam no doubt. Dates to around the mid 1930's. A bulb filler rests under the removable blind cap. Spiral barrel pattern with tranparency is in play. This one grades at least Fine, with good color, clean trim and but modest barrel clarity |

late 1930's second-tier Wahl, this one shares the
tapered/blunt look
prevalent to Wahls from this era and share styling with
the
metal-capped and all-metal Coronet. Great nib. Lever
really is not
brassed- more "nickeled" having lost hte gold wash and
showing white
metal.  Nicks and such scatter on the plastic.

| COMMENTS:  Skylines
are loved or hated (gee, that narrows it down). They are
the most
distinctive looking pens amongst the Big-5 from this
era. Many, many
varieties exist. This one has a celluloid cap in a lined
pattern, and
packs a wide gold-filled cap-band. I cannot prove the
following, but
note that at a recent pen show a couple Skyline
collectors labelled
this one a military model, noting the cocktail of solid
barrel, striped
cap, solid derby and wide cap-band is what was shown in
adverts to
military personnel.  Idunno. This one is prety clean. Good color and threads. Very nice writer. Trace edge brassing, particularly on the lever. |

odd-duck
semi-streamlined
flat-top, this pen is a well known, uncatalogued, and
scarce variant on
the Wahl Personal Point Flat Top to Equi-Poised
continuum.
Perhaps one of these crops up for every hundred
catalogued sister
variants.  Pens are known in Coral, Lapis,
Brazilian Green and
Black/Pearl. I would not be suprised to see Jade and
Black show up too. A few imperfections need be noted. The pen has the punched seal of a late-release product, but has a Wahl Gold Seal nib usually seen when the seal is not punched. On other hand, the GS nib actually is a better nib than the warranted nibs seen more commonly with punched seal. The celluloid has good color but a hint of texture from differential aging of the green vs copper panels. Overall nice look. Scarce, high cachet Wahl. |

The pens are amongst the most beautiful  from the
era- in our
opinion
of course.  Often plagued by subdued color, frank
crazing and
cracking,
they are not easy to find clean. the chrome-tone trim
often is trashed
and does not polish up in the manner of goldfilled
trim.
Blue is- in our experience- the most difficult color, less often seen than Brown, Green, Red, Purple, Silver and Black. The box-diamond cap-band indicates a less expensive model, often found lacking the adjustable nib. The pen appears in two sizes. This one is the larger. This pen has one flaw- scattered light tooth marks at the blind end of the pen. Otherwise it is superb. |

Truly utilitarian jewelry from the mid 1920's, this is one of the larger Wahl metal models (i've heard of a pen with a #6 nib, but have not handled one). This one packs the proper, "Wahl #5 nib". The point is XF and a bit scratchy. No brassing is present but a tiny ding about 1mm in diameter is present by one of the breather holes in the cap.

variety of

The
2nd generation Doric done in cross-hatched plastic,
produced
roughly 1935-1940, are some of the most lovely vintage
pens. This one
is the second largest size, is a Gold
Seal model (though of course the gold seal in
this case is
chrome). amd packs a large ostensibly flexible nib,
though in practice
it seems more semi-flex.  The pen has no trim
pitting and no
ambering,
both nice finds in a color/trim that tends to suffer
those problems.
The pic shows a "spot" on the clip. That is not
brassing/pitting and is
gone after a light wipe down.  the lever has one
tiny speck of
brassing, seen in the additional pictures.  A
lovely Doric whose
only flaws are a
few scratches in the gripping section and a slight ding
at distal edge
of the section.
By end of August the scratches will be  removed by
restorer Ron
Zorn. I missed 'em during a marathon restoration session
last week.
Trim has good lustre and lacks pitting often seen
on white trim. |

| COMMENTS:
The 1935-1940 or so 2nd Generation Doric featured
single cross hatched
colors.  The pens are amongst the most
beautiful  from the
era-
in our opinion of course.  Often plagued by
subdued color, frank
crazing
and cracking, they are not easy to find clean. the
chrome-tone trim
often
is trashed and does not polish up in the manner of
goldfilled
trim.
Blue is- in our experience- the most difficult color, less often seen than Brown, Green, Red, Purple, Silver and Black. The box-diamond cap-band indicates a less expensive model, often found lacking the adjustable nib. The pen appears in two sizes. This one is the smaller. It is a wee gem, resaced by El Zorno last week (clear sac). No crazing. Great trim. Lovely flexible writer. |

A decent Skyline with a "better" cap pattern.

| COMMENTS: A gorgeous early Wahl Flat-top, preceding the celluloid/personal-point era. The pen has a sweat flex nib, but the nib is from a Mabie-Todd pen. Such is life. I've tossed in a spare #2 Wahl nib in case you ever wish to make pen "correct", but it is quite nice as it is. A great writer and beautifulp en. | |||
