COMMENTS:  Probably 1949-1951 production window.  Injection-molded plastic and touchdown filler dates pen to post 1948.  Chubby contour pre-dates the Thin Model Touchdown.  No doubt i need to review the dating of these. The pen has particularly smooth medium point upturned conical (Triumph) nib. Excellent condition. No dings. Slight darkening at back of barrel.

COMMENTS:  The color of greatest cachet amongst the 1940's celluloid Sheaffers. The wider of the two cap-band styles. Opaque barrel with black/clear knurled gripping section. Two tone Triumph nib of course. Clean imprint and plastic.  One pin-sized mark to clip. Nice color. Moderate preservation of blind cap knurling. Superb writer with smooth wet medium line.

COMMENTS:  Valiant at $12.50 (thus "1250" on barrel) is the largest plastic post-war 1940's Sheaffer, markedly heftier than the war-years $12.50 Triumph.   This one features the narrower (still plump) cap-band, has matching gripping section and transparent barrel with modest ruby barrel clarity.  Trim and nib quite clean. Couple light marks to plastic. Modest preservation of blind cap knurling. Superb writer with Medium+ (med-broad) point, wet and smooth line.

COMMENTS:  Most 1940's full-length pens had matching Tuckies. Barrels are shorter than on full-length pens, but caps are same length, though never  with the same clip.  Post-War Tuckies have the short "clasp" style clip.  Pens post to nice size and still have hefty gripping sections. This one has the narrower (still plump) cap-band, with opaque barrel and black/clear section retaining modest transparency. The barrel assembly is excellent in all respects. Cap-band has a shallow 3mm crease-style ding. Light marks to plastic on cap. Excellent writer.

COMMENTS:  The upscale Sentinels are sibs to the large Valiant and  nearly-as-large Statesman, with brushed steel cap (with GF ring) instead of the plastic cap. The two Sentinels cost $2.50 more than their all-plastic sibs. Unlike the Crest with its gold-filled cap, Sentinel appears in most, maybe all colors, adding charm and challenge for the collector. The white-dot of course is at bottom of blind-cap as Sheaffer was not yet installing white dots on metal caps.  Most found have badly marred caps. These are distinctly less common than the all plastic pens.  Sentinel at $12.50 is the upgraded Statesman, medium size pen. This one features the transparent barrel (better clarity than photo shows) and matching striped opaque gripping section.   ON this one, barrel assembly is very clean with sharp blind cap knurling. The cap has no  full-fledged dings but has couple miniscule superficial pin marks. Excellent writer with that upturned Sheaffer "Waverly" nib with smooth tip and excellent ink-flow.

COMMENTS:   Valiant at $12.50 (thus "1250" on barrel) is the largest plastic post-war 1940's Sheaffer, markedly heftier than the war-years $12.50 Triumph.   This one features the narrower (still plump) cap-band. Amongst the numerous structural and style tweaks done from 1946-1949, this one is a recognized though less common variant. Most pens have transparency either at the entire barrel or partially on the gripping section. This one has it only at the front end of the barrel but also has the partial gripping section transparency.  While the trim is just grand, the plastic has seen some honest wear and tear. The cap has bit of celluloid shrinkage mid cap giving hint of a ridge  by the clip ball. Blind cap knurling is worn. Color is nice.  Excellent writer with that upturned Sheaffer "Waverly" Triumph nib. Smooth wet Medium point. Save some money and grab a pen that has been well used, but is intact with decent eye appeal.

COMMENTSThe first full-celluloid pen from Sheaffer in the 1940's, the one that gave name to the "Triumph" conical nib.  The series that replaced the Balance. With Parker embracing injection-molded plastic and hidden nibs with the Parker "51", Sheaffer went full throttle with classic celluloid and with a new style bold open nib. It's flush cap was quite unusual for the day, made possible by the metal cap-band that served also as cap-lip.   If you've heard my screed about gray pens from the 1930's-40's , you know my claim that they are common today because they were gorgeous when made, but that they underprice other colors today because the pale celluloid shows discoloration more readily and because the chrome trim once worn will not polish well as does gold-filled trim. They often don't look so nice.   But, clean examples are a grand find indeed. This one pops.  Great color. Superb clarity. Clean chrome trim, and smooth wet-writing fine-to-extra-fine point with that classic upturned Sheaffer "Waverly" nib.

COMMENTS:  Statesman was the base Triumph-nib model of second size for the post-War era (got that?). The barrel is about the size of the war-era Triumph, but the cap of course is more plump than the flush-fit cap of the earlier pen.  This one has the narrower of the two cap-band styles found on Statesman, and has the barrel variant with clear barrel and opaque matching section.  Clean pen with hint of darkening to the cap celluloid just to the right of the clip.  Crisp manufacturer's imprint. Sharp knurling on the blind cap.  Nice smooth fine point, as expected in Sheaffer's upturned "Waverly"-style Triumph point.

This one features the wider of the two cap-band styles with opaque barrel and black/clear gripping section. Barrel assembly grades excellent or better with sharp knurling to the blind cap, razor imprint and clear gripping section. Cap has scattered light marks and a superficial thin scratch on cap-band.Most of the Triumph make nice writers given the upturned tip. Excellent writer with very fine point.

COMMENTS:  Valiant at $12.50 (thus "1250" on barrel) is the largest plastic post-war 1940's Sheaffer, markedly heftier than the war-years $12.50 Triumph.  After using celluloid since around 1924, Sheaffer gave in to the injection-molded plastic trend in 1948. The wire (plunger) filling system was continued, until being replaced by the new Touchdown filler in 1949. Thus, non-celluloid, wire-filler pens ran for about a year.  This one shows nearly no sign of use, and is really near-mint. However, it has just a touch of the typical-to-series cap-shrinkage starting  just above the clip ball. This really is not a "wear" issue, but figured I'd  grade conservatively. Sharp pen. very fine point.

COMMENTS:  Statesman is the base Triumph-nib model of second size for the post-War era (got that?). The barrel is about the size of the war-era Triumph, but the cap of course is more plump than the flush-fit cap of Triumph. Celluloid gave way to injection-molded plastic in 1948, but the wire filling system persisted until 1949. Thus, wire-fill, injection-plastic pens were manufacatured for about a year.  This one is superb in all respects and indeed is mint, having not met ink. It is double stickered.  It has been fully restored and carries the one year function warranty, but may not be returned if inked or dipped.

COMMENTS:  Related to the $12.50 largest plastic pen from 1946-1950, the Sentinel featured an upscale steel/GF cap and cost $2.50 more than Valiant.  Many are stamped "1500" reflecting this retail cost.  Celluloid gave way to injection-molded plastic in 1948, the wire filling system gave way to Touchdown in 1949, Brushed metal cap on Sentinel Deluxe gave way to the polished cap "probably" with the switch from celluloid to injection-plastic, and... to keep us hopping, white dot at butt of pen on metal-capped pens, gave way to white dot on the metal cap it seems a  bit before the introduction of the Touchdown filling pens.   This one thus is a "late" wire-fill, injection-plastic pen, having the white dot on metal cap instead of on bottom of pen. Got it?   This one writes a nice fine line. The plastic is clean. No brassing. But.. there are couple light "crease" style dings at back of cap, more of a flattening of contour than anything worse.  Nice user priced accordingly.

COMMENTSMost 1940's full-length pens had matching Tuckies. Barrels are shorter than on full-length pens, but caps are same length, though never  with the same clip.  Post-War Tuckies have the short "clasp" style clip.  Pens post to nice size and still have hefty gripping sections. This one has the narrower (still plump) cap-band.  Most post-war celluloid pens have either completely clear barrel (with opaque matching section usually) or opaque barrel with black/clear gripping section. Some though, have just a region of barrel transparnecy by the section. This is one such. Probably corresponds to yet another filling-system tweak.  This pen would be in grand condition-- clean everything-- but has one cosmetic defect on barrel. There is a small (3mm or so) round  quite shallow divot in the barrel plastic. Obviously no threat to function, it is noticeable when the pen is turned just so.  Nice writer otherwise sharp condition. Discounted for that divot.

This one features the wider of the two cap-band styles, with opaque barrel variant and with black/clear gripping section. An overall clean pen, its most prominent imperfection is the presence of scattered light use marks to the blind cap.

COMMENTS:  The post-war Crest with its lined gold-filled cap   is upscale sibling  to the second size all-plastic Statesman, with an associated bump in original retail from $10 to $15. Crest, unlike the steel-capped Sentinel, was offered only in Black and in Brown. This one is a presumably earlier variant with stripes of transparency in the barrel and with matching brown knurled gripping section.  As Sheaffer was not yet installing white dots in metal caps, this one of course has the proper blind-cap white dot and has the "1500 price code in the barrel.  Grading Extra Fine it has nice color, sharp imprint, crisp knurling to blind cap, modest clarity, occasional light mark to barrel and just hint of flattening at very top of cap (as is common to these) that really needs a loupe to see. Nice smooth wet fine point.

COMMENTS:  The first full-celluloid pen from Sheaffer in the 1940's, the one that gave name to the "Triumph" conical nib. While the overwhelming majority of Triumph are wire (plunger) filler, occasionally is found  a lever filler. The lever filler of course has opaque barrel and unusual two piece section distal to the section, partially integrated to the barrel (and striped), partly transparent to show ink level. Thus the section-thread assembly has three regions black, clear, striped, instead of two, as found on most pens. This pen has nice color and clean trim. The griping section is a smidge off center leading the cap to close a bit off center as well.  Wet-writing Fine Point.

Pen 2945 -TB   Sheaffer "For Your Autograph"  1946-7... or later  $145

COMMENTS: Essentially a fat-boy Valiant but with solid gold clip and with solid-gold band, the "For Your Autogaph" is one of three pens to carry solid gold, along with the gold-cap Crest Masterpiece and the all-gold Masterpiece. The pen carries appropriate "14-k" hallmarks at clip and band. The band is smooth, unlike that of Valiant. Original price was a hefty $20. Autorgaph- for reason uncertain- is more often found with lever-filler than are pens of lower price from the era, which usually are wire-filler, or, after 1948, Touchdown.  The exact production run for these is uncertain. It is possible the Autographs ran from 1946 through the end of the fat Touchdowns around 1950. Thus, celluloid and injection-plastic pens perhaps are found. This one feels celluloid-ish, though I keep open mind. This one grades  a conservative Fine-ExtraFine.  Couple light marks here n' there on the plastic.  Imprint a bit light. Couple very light tiny superficial dings to band. Hint  of the typical cap-shrinkage causing a slight line around the cap right by the clip ball.  Writes a plump Medium+ line with excellent inkflow.
